Dutch Hotels ban American Express credit card
Dutch Hotels ban American Express credit card
Dutch hotel owners are banning the American Express (Amex) credit card. A payment with an Amex card is disproportionately expensive for the hotel operators.
The department of Royal Horeca Netherlands has decided not to accept payments any more from the credit card company, according to The Telegraph.
High Credit card Commission Costs
Two years of negotiations were unsuccessful decrease the high costs of using the credit cards. President of hotels catering Frans Hazen speaks of ridiculously high commission costs.
Where companies like Visa or MasterCard charge us about 1.5% of the payment, with Amex the commission is between 2.95% and 3.85%, according to Mr. Hazen.
The recession is forcing the Dutch hotel sector to ban the American Express credit card and save millions of Euros.

Typical dutch blind money grabbing , as some one who only uses a Corprate American Express card for hotel stays I guess My company and I will just give this backward back water a miss. It’s bad enough that in the 21st century your Supermakets and half of other stores do not take credit cards . I hope like me many companys find a more flexible friendly country to work with. I expect many people will now cancel as hotels will now refuse there American express cards used to secure bookings.

Karl, you obviously have never had to deal with the “ass end” of American Express as a vendor.
I own a travel agency in another “backward back water” on The Great Barrier Reef in Australia,
I too am an American Express card holder, and as a retailer I still wouldn’t touch Amex with a 10 foot barge pole.
Running a business with a maximum margin of 10% – why the hell would I give Amex near to half of my hard earned cash – get your head read or pull it out of something, and welcome to the real world.
P.S Give Mastercard or Visa a call – you might get a pat on the back for saving your company a lot of money too.
