I own a travel agency in another "backward back water" on The Great Barrier Reef in Australia, I too am an American Express card holder, and as a retailer I still wouldn't touch Amex with a 10 foot barge pole. Running a business with a maximum margin of 10% - why the hell would I give Amex near to half of my hard earned cash - get your head read or pull it out of something, and welcome to the real world. It's bad enough that in the 21st century your Supermakets and half of other stores do not take credit cards . I hope like me many companys find a more flexible friendly country to work with. I expect many people will now cancel as hotels will now refuse there American express cards used to secure bookings.
