Dutch people of Gouda say cheese to improve image

Dutch people of Gouda are fed up that their city is only associated with crime, insecurity and inconvenience. To improve their negative image they flock to the market as a group to stand behind their city.

Hundreds of residents of Gouda arrived Saturday at the market for the town hall to close the campaign SayCheeseGouda. The project was designed to provide a counterbalance to the negative portrayal by the news of crime, insecurity and nuisances in the city.

In recent weeks, more than 3500 inhabitants of Gouda showed their laughter (in English cheese) put on the Internet because they are tired of poor image of Gouda. Gouda laughs at each other, to and with each other, according to the organization. It is not about a campaign by the municipality, but a citizens’ initiative.

It is fantastic to see so many citizens express their dissatisfaction concerning the repeatedly unilateral and negative representation of the city in the papers and online press. This recent stream of negative publicity has ruined a lot of the relative and clearly visible progress made so far.

Although this does not solve any issues of course, it gives people a renewed positive spirit, and the posters are a fantastic view on itself.
