Dutch unemployment drops for the first time since crisis

For the first time since the summer of 2008, the beginning of the crisis, unemployment in The Netherlands has dropped. The Central Bureau of Statistics finds it too early to talk of a turnaround.

Over the period from February to April were on average 459 000 people unemployed, representing 5.9 percent of the workforce. There were 13000 fewer than in the months January to March, when 6.1 percent of the workforce had no job.

In all provinces, the number of people looking for work, Friesland and Drenthe showed the greatest improvement. Yet CBS still does not want to conclude that there is an end to rising unemployment. The total number of jobs continues to shrink, as the number of vacancies.

According to the UWV is a lot better in the industry. This sector reported this year more than thirty percent more vacancies than in the first four months of 2008. Financial institutions are far less looking for staff. They had one quarter less vacancies.
