Dutch water expertise for South Africa
Dutch water experts are helping to improve South Africa’s water and sanitation sector. In a joint project, the Durban water utility and Dutch parties Vitens-Evides, World Waternet, Wateropleidingen and Your Man On Site, have set up a Centre of Excellence for water management in Durban. The Dutch ambassador to South Africa, André Haspels, and Neil Macleod, head of eThekwini Water & Sanitation (EWS), officially launched the centre on 8 May 2012.
The centre, which is hosted by EWS, will introduce innovations and best practices to the Southern African water and sanitation sector. It will launch pilot projects for new water technologies and promote knowledge-sharing.
The partnership program, which is partially funded by the Dutch government, will run for four years. The initial focus is on non-revenue water, asset management, sanitation and the reduction of energy consumption. Four pilot projects have been started for 2012, several more are under development.
