A Media Intelligence Lab report, released today, shows that Groupon…

A Media Intelligence Lab report, released today, shows that Groupon customers in the Netherlands may have spent up to € 115 million on “Daily deals” in 2011. Although the Dutch new media market research company suggests that the daily deal market is still growing, consolidation of market players is expected for 2012 due to market saturation.

The top three market players in the Netherlands in terms of revenue are believed to be Groupon, Marktplaats Aanbieding (owned by Ebay) and Groupdeal (partly owned by the publisher Telegraaf Media Group).

Groupon’s entry into the Dutch market in 2010 seems to have been a success thus far. The report indicates Groupon’s revenues experienced an average of 50% quarter-on-quarter growth throughout 2011. However, the report questions whether Groupon will be able to sustain this high level of growth going forward. The report suggests that Groupon’s apparent determination to grow as fast as possible by offering as many deals as possible may be too far removed from the original business model that led to the company’s success.

The report, containing detailed intelligence on all key players in the Dutch daily deals market gathered throughout 2011 (prices, discounts, number of deals offered, turnover figures and forecasts for the market up until 2015), can be ordered through Media Intelligence Lab’s website.

Research was performed among 10 key market players in the Netherlands and their offers, backed up by In-depth data analysis on 2000 daily deals offered by Groupon and other market players.

Funded by the Knowledge Based Bio Economy program of the …

Funded by the Knowledge Based Bio Economy program of the EU, the 13 million euro BioConSepT project starts in February 2012. The project wants to convince and inspire stakeholders of the Bio-based Economy by demonstrating the complete feasibility of an integrated chain approach, which is regarded as the basis for the next generation industrial White Biotechnology processes. The aim is to deliver processes that convert 2nd generation biomass into valuable chemicals, which are 30% cheaper and 30% more sustainable than the corresponding chemical routes or the biotechnology processes starting from 1st generation feedstocks like glucose.

Transferring feedstock into chemicals
BioConSepT focuses on the use of so-called 2nd generation feedstocks like lignocellulose and non-edible oils and fats, which cannot be used for the production of food. The partners have selected 7 chains for chemicals that can be made from these materials. Both bioconversions with enzymes and microorganisms and chemical reactions are used in the production chains. The introduction of continuous processes, novel reactors and selective separation technologies will generate breakthroughs in costs and sustainability. The project will deliver samples of the envisioned applications, which include green polymers, resins, plasticizers, surfactants and solvents for testing in the market. After 2 years BioConSepT will select the 2 most promising chains for demonstration at a scale of 100 to 1000 kg product.

From a fossil-based to a bio-based economy
The transition of a fossil-based to a bio-based economy will have a tremendous impact on both society as a whole and important industrial sectors like agriculture, the chemical and food industries and the energy sector. Taking a frontrunner position in the bio-based economy is essential for maintaining the leading economic position of the European process industry, the conservation of jobs, the security of energy supply and the creation of a sustainable society.

The project is an initiative to reduce the closing gap between the laboratory and the industrial practice for the production of chemicals from abundantly available biomass.

The BioConSepT consortium is coordinated by TNO and consists of 31 partners from Research and Technology Organizations, large industrial companies and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.

As of today, Spanish followers and fans of Facebook and Twitter will be able to communicate in their own language.

Adding Spanish in addition to the existing English and Dutch services, was prompted by the fact that around 329 million people in 21 countries speak Spanish, making it the third most widely spoken language in the world.

The new service will especially benefit Facebook and Twitter fans and followers in Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru and Spain, as well as Spanish speakers in the US. Facebook and Twitter have proved their worth repeatedly in recent times. Aside from responding to questions communicated by customers, these social media channels can be used to rebook, cancel and/or book extra baggage capacity on flights.

The Spanish service will also be available 24/7. Future plans include expanding the number of languages offered via social media. The response target is to answer questions within the hour and to find solutions within 24 hours.

To steal a virtual amulet and mask from in an …

To steal a virtual amulet and mask from in an online computer game is theft, according to Dutch law.

Virtual possessions have value because a lot of time and effort is spent to collect the goods. To that the Dutch Supreme Court concludes Tuesday.

The Supreme Court examined a case involving two boys who abused and threatened a 13-year-old boy. They forced the victim to logging on to the game Runescape and drop his virtual amulet and mask. This allowed one of the guys to steal the mask and amulet.

The boys were given a community service of 144 hours, slightly lower than at the court. That was because the Supreme court spend too much time on the case.

Nearly 4 million people in the Netherlands are playing online …

Nearly 4 million people in the Netherlands are playing online games, according to new research conducted by Spil Games.

Online gaming is continuing its remarkable success, with new statistics showing almost 50 per cent of the online community across the globe playing online games (comScore, December 2011), with Spil Games the number one destination.

Key gaming habits are revealed in the annual State of Gaming review conducted by Spil Games, which operates three social gaming platforms – GirlsgoGames.com, Agame.com and Gamesgames.com.

The popularity of online gaming was also evident on Spil Games’ platforms. The amount of people playing in 2011 soared to 170 million, up by 40 million year-on-year. These impressive numbers scored Spil Games the number one slot as the most-visited online gaming property in the world*.

Online gamers have increased their online playing time from 38 to 85 minutes per month. In the US, the most popular game last year was Pet Party whereas globally Bubble Shooter takes the top spot.

“What we’ve noticed over the past year is that more people are playing more online games – and for longer, said Peter Driessen, CEO of Spil Games. “The benefit of social gaming platforms like ours is that they encourage players to create, connect and share. 2011 marked the year online games came of age, and we expect the number of players to continue to grow, cementing their position as the most dominant way we’re playing.”

The Dutch are the most active Twitter users worldwide, according …

The Dutch are the most active Twitter users worldwide, according to Semiocast’s latest study.

This study reveals that users from the Netherlands are the most active within top countries. 33% of accounts located in the Netherlands posted at least one public message between September 1st, 2011 and November 30th, 2011, making the Netherlands the top country with the highest rate of Twitter users posting tweets, before Japan. The global average is only 27%, as many Twitter users mostly use the service to read tweets from others.

If one also considers accounts that have been updated in some other way (e.g. the user did not post but changed its account avatar or followed another user), the Netherlands also rank first, with at least 52% of users who connected to Twitter service during the period. The global average for the same metric is 48%.

The U.S. still top at the 1st place on Twitter in terms of accounts with 107.7 million accounts. Brazil is now the second country with 33.3 million accounts, surpassing Japan now third at 29.9 million.

Semiocast has analyzed 383 million of Twitter user profiles created before January 1st 2012. Drawing from its experience with previous studies, Semiocast used its proprietary platform, databases and tools to process user profiles in order to determine the location of each user using all available information.

NASA has launched its first multi-player online game to test …

NASA has launched its first multi-player online game to test players’ knowledge of the space program. Who was the first American to walk in space? Who launched the first liquid-fueled rocket? These are only a few of the questions players can answer in Space Race Blastoff.

Available on Facebook, Space Race Blastoff tests players’ knowledge of NASA history, technology, science and pop culture. Players who correctly answer questions earn virtual badges depicting NASA astronauts, spacecraft and celestial objects. Players also earn points they can use to obtain additional badges to complete sets and earn premium badges.

“Space Race Blastoff opens NASA’s history and research to a wide new audience of people accustomed to using social media,” said David Weaver, NASA’s associate administrator for communications. “Space experts and novices will learn new things about how exploration continues to impact our world.”

NASA chose to make the game available through Facebook to take advantage of the social media site’s large audience and enable players to compete against others. Individuals also can play solo games.

Once in the game, players choose an avatar and answer 10 multiple-choice questions. Each correct answer earns 100 points, with a 20-point bonus to the player who answers first. The winner advances to the bonus round to answer one additional question for more points.
Correctly answering the bonus question earns the player a badge.

Space Race Blastoff was developed by Scott Hanger, Todd Powell and Jamie Noguchi of NASA’s Internet Services Group in the Office of Communications. Play the game now at:

Four leading Dutch publishers today launch the iPad app NLinBusiness. …

Four leading Dutch publishers today launch the iPad app NLinBusiness. It brings Dutch business professionals news in the area of Marketing, Technology, Economy, Finance and Healthcare. NLinBusiness is based on the imgZine platform, a white labeled ‘Flipboard’ for publishers and corporates.

Until now publishers were at the mercy of aggregation apps like Flipboard and Zite to be included in their publications. No longer: as of today publishers and corporates can have a real time magazine under their own brand.

Dutch company imgZine introduces a platform for fully automated, real time, digital magazine publications. Not only for the iPad, but also for iPhone and Android tablets and phones.

NLinBusiness is the first tangible proof of the platform’s capabilities. It is a unique joint publication of four (competing) publishers of business information. It is aimed at the Dutch business professional and offers news from a total of 12 different sources from Dutch publishers: Adformatie Groep, Free Media Group, MT MediaGroep and Springer Media.

The imgZine platform consists of two components: the server side platform that processes content and provides general services (sharing, caching, analytics) and the imgZine app. The imgZine app integrates multiple content sources that may contain video, sound, pictures and text, resulting in a digital magazine tailored to modern reading: scan headlines, click articles of interest and share through social media like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

imgZine enables publishers and corporates to use the power of real time magazines like Flipboard under their own brand. It offers a smart and cost effective solution for creating a realtime magazine based on existing content. A solution that requires no extra DTP, IT or editorial effort.
