Electric Bills Going Sky High

The energy costs of almost all Dutch will increase by 1st July. Nuon and Essent, the two largest energy suppliers of the Netherlands, will raise their prices.

Nuon-customers will see an increase in their bills with average 10 euro per month, Essent-customers will increase about 11 euro per month. Expensive oil forces the companies to increase the prices for gas and electricity.

The record-high oil price, which passed 130 dollars per barrel already, will have its effect in the price for gas. This happened to be linked to the oil price. The price increase also will have an effect for the price of produced electricity.

At Nuon the variable tariff for gas will increase with 15 per cent and variable electricity tariff with 3 per cent. At Essent variable electricity tariff increases with 6 per cent.

Nuon will adjust the installment amount of many customers. The energy companies expects that people will choose for a fixed energy rate and will pay more attention to unnecessary energy usage.

Customers of Essent can get green energy until 1st January 2010 for the same price as ordinary energy.

I disagree with the reason taht this is due to the high price of oil. Oil price has undergone a significant decrease since the record peak it reached in July 2008. On December 23, 2008, WTI crude oil spot price fell to US$30.28 a barrel, the lowest since the global financial crisis began, and has been trading between US$35 a barrel and US$60 a barrel in 2009. Are you sture that this is caused by energy company shareholders asking for more profit?
