Google TV in your living room
Google and Intel have teamed up with Sony and Logitech to bring a Google TV experience into the living room.
According to the NY Times Google has developed a platform called Google TV to bring the Web into the living room through a new generation of TVs and set-top boxes. The technology may also be incorporated directly into TVs or other devices such as the Playstation 3 and Blu-ray players.
The TV technology is based on Google’s open-source Android mobile phone operating system with Sony stepping up to support it — likely including both set-top boxes and internet-connected TVs.
The NY Times said that the Google TV platform would present users with a new interface for TVs that lets them perform Internet functions like search while also pulling down Web programming like YouTube videos. You will be able to browse the Web and update your social network profiles right from your TV.
According to the NY Times the Google TV project has been under way for several months but that none of the companies involved would comment publicly at this time.
Google is expected to deliver a toolkit to outside programmers within the next couple of months, and products based on the software could appear as soon as this summer.
