Homeless get diploma

A total of 32 homeless from Rotterdam get a diploma for reading and writing. Since October they followed a course in an activity centre in the city. The initiative came from themselves.

The course of the regional training centre Albeda started in October. It became an unexpectedly big success. The Council of the CVD, a institution for the homeless, counted on a drop-out of 50 per cent. In total only eight people dropped out in those twenty weeks because they got a paid job or had moved.

"There is a huge motivation and enthusiasm", according to a spokesman of the CVD. Its so huge that the course is offered again for a larger group of participants, and a number of participants can continue to a regular training at Albeda.

The participants are happy to get math lessons and improves their reading and writing skills.

The rotterdammers - serious drug addicts and people with mental problems - faithfully attended the course weekly. They try to make something of their life. They want a job.

Princess Laurentien who supports the project has a special surprise for the graduates. The training program is unique in the Netherlands.
