Netherlands is largest recipient of US Direct Investment
For the third consecutive year, the Netherlands was the largest recipient of US Direct Investment, amounting to 595.1 billion US dollars.
In July, 2012, the US Bureau of Economic Analysis published the revised direct investment positions for 2010 and the preliminary figures for 2011. In 2011, US investment abroad increased by 364.6 billion US dollars, to 4,155.6 billion US dollars, indicating a growth of 10 percent; some 2 percent up on 2010. The growth in the outward direct investment position reflected reinvested earnings, which were at the highest level on record, higher net equity investments, and an increase in foreign affiliates’ indebtedness to their US parents.
Positions in the Netherlands and the UK were the largest – 14.3 percent and 13.2 percent respectively of the total. Most of the position increase and 77 percent of the position in the Netherlands was accounted for by holding companies, which likely invested the funds in other countries.
