Six Featured Runners will be given ING Runner’s Nation running wear and a Flip HD video camera to upload videos, photos and blog posts about their training leading up to the marathon. Fans of the ING Runner’s Nation will vote on their favorite featured runner. During race week, one of the six selected runners will be chosen for a VIP race-day experience, including luxury transportation to and VIP tent access at the start village.

To enter, runners must upload a short video (3 minutes or less) explaining why they should be picked as one of six ING Featured Runners. The contest runs now through October 3. In order to be eligible for this contest, runners must be a registered entrant in the ING New York City Marathon 2011, which will be held on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011. They recently sought out just what effect the hurricane would have on New York City. With the current threat of Irene, the study becomes very topical again.

The professor of climate and water hazards Jeroen Aerts estimates that the flood damage to buildings would be up to $ 22 billion. If the hurricane stagnates businesses, the economic damage would be much more costly.

In a report on the future of New York, Aerts and his colleagues’ Mayor Bloomberg made proposals for the flood proofing of his city.

”He has two options: raising the dikes and flood barriers or see to it that building regulations are complied with, ‘said Aerts Friday. In the short term, evacuation the only option to minimize the damages, says Aerts.

Hurricane Irene battered New York early Sunday, shutting down the city, and millions of Americans sought shelter from a huge storm that halted transport and caused massive power blackouts.

“I designed a building I would want to live in as a New Yorker,” said renowned architect Frank Gehry . “You could say this is my love letter to New York City. I’m thrilled we were able to do it in Lower Manhattan, which allowed me to be part of something so meaningful — to stand with this building’s neighbors, the residents and businesses of this neighborhood. We worked together over the past seven years to create a new icon for Lower Manhattan.”

With over 300 families already residing in this all-rental 903-unit, 76-story vertical city, it’s clear that Lower Manhattan’s matrix has expanded beyond the finance industry. Many tenants work in design and media as well as law and finance.

Gehry designed not only the exhilarating façade but all of the interiors, and the artist’s vision is everywhere from the sculptural concierge desk to the screening room’s amphitheater seating. Amenities include a pool, a grilling terrace and chef’s kitchen, a “tweens’ den,” children’s playroom, and 3,300 sf fitness center overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge.

Open space includes two public plazas designed by Field Operations, the creative force behind Manhattan’s High Line and Dutch horticulturist Piet Oudolf, who collaborated with Gehry on Chicago’s Millennium Park.

A revolutionary initiative by Going DUTCH, ‘Tentoonstelling’ introduces a new concept of presenting Dutch art in context by showcasing works of the past and today side-by-side in context, and placing them in their rightful place in the trajectory of art history and cultural evolution.

The Dutch word tentoonstelling stands for exhibition and in its new interpretation as presented by the Going DUTCH foundation, it will embody the cross-over between an exhibition and an art fair, where the works shown will be available for viewing and for sale.

Through ‘Tentoonstelling’, Going Dutch wishes to create a new, independent platform for the promotion of Dutch culture and to introduce it to a New York-based audience through the trained vision of a select team of curators.

In New York a Dutch girl on her bicycle almost got a fine because she wore a skirt.

Apparently, this is not allowed in the American metropolis New York City. Other road users might get distracted, with all its consequences.

This happened to a Jasmijn Rijcken, the general manager of the Dutch bicycle company VANMOOF, who was in New York to visit The New Amsterdam Bicycle Show. At the moment the police note down her name and address, he found out that she was from the Netherlands.

She convinced him that wearing such clothing on a bicycle in the Netherlands is very normal, so she received a warning to wear pants next time.

Jasmijn: “In NYC the POLICE told me NOT TO WEAR A DRESS! I distracted cars and should only wear pants while biking! he was NOT joking, death serious! I cannot believe it… how can they say they are a bike & woman friendly city? So discriminating!”

Only when he discovered I was not from the U.S., he calmed down somewhat and I could drive on, but had to promise to put on pants next time. ”

This is not the first time an NYPD officer has stopped cyclists for completely frivolous non-offenses. In April, a private school administrator received a ticket for biking with a tote bag on her handlebars. The police have not responded to a Streetsblog inquiry about Rijcken’s allegations.

Her harassment at the hands of the police has colored Rijcken’s perception of not only New York City but the United States. “I was shocked,” she said. “In Holland, people refer to America as the country of freedom.”

New York is “hailing” a new era of urban mobility today, as the city with the nation’s largest taxi fleet has selected Nissan to design and supply the next-generation “Taxi of Tomorrow.” The announcements were made today during a City Hall press briefing that included Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Nissan Americas Chairman Carlos Tavares.

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) selected the Nissan NV200 as the exclusive taxi of New York City beginning in late 2013. The award comes after a rigorous selection process that lasted over two years. The competition built upon more than a century of taxi industry heritage to drive the design and creation of a purpose-built vehicle, tuned to the city’s streets. The other two finalists included Ford Motor Co. and Karsan, a Turkish vehicle manufacturer.

“Nissan is proud to provide the next generation of taxis for the City of New York,” said Tavares. “The NV200 taxi will give Nissan the opportunity to showcase our dedication to vehicle quality and urban mobility to more than 600,000 passengers every day.”

The Nissan NV200 taxi will be produced in North America at Nissan’s facility in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The Nissan NV200 taxi will be a modified version of the compact commercial vehicle currently available in global markets including Japan, Europe and China. Total manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) of the vehicle, with all planned standard features, will be around $29,000.

As part of the program, Nissan also will work with the City and taxi owners on a pilot program to study the use of zero-emission, electric vehicles as taxis. Nissan will provide up to six 100-percent electric Nissan LEAFs to taxi owners for testing in 2012 as well as the charging stations to support their use.

“The city’s Taxi of Tomorrow is the Nissan NV 200 – and it’s going to be the safest, most comfortable and most convenient cab the city has ever had,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “We started this process to leverage our taxi industry’s purchasing power to get the highest quality taxi, one that that can expand and redefine the legendary image of New York City taxicabs. The new taxis will be custom-designed to meet the specific demands of carrying 600,000 passengers a day in New York City traffic and the vehicle meets the top priorities identified by the public in our on-line survey.”

With more than 13,000 taxis traveling a cumulative 500 million miles per year, durability was a key factor in the “Taxi of Tomorrow” selection process. Nissan will train taxi fleet operators to conduct routine in-house service and repairs, and Nissan Commercial Vehicle dealers will provide prompt service by providing the first available service bay to taxi operators needing service.

Musical guest The Black Eyed Peas kicked off the show with Boom Boom Pow as Ambrosio walked first in neon wings, with Miranda Kerr following in oversized space-like armored wings.

Victoria’s Secret always fuels hype about its models. An online model search started earlier this month and is now down to two contestants, one of whom will be chosen by the public to appear in the televised version of the fashion show that CBS will air Dec. 1.

Klum, who normally wears the most elaborate outfits, only appeared once, so it was former Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover girl Marissa Miller who had the honor of wearing a $3 million, diamond-encrusted bra.
